New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) announced on Monday that masks are no longer required for vaccinated individuals in the state — but the vaccine passport will replace them as the new standard of COVID compliance.
“If you are vaccinated, you are safe, no masks, no social distancing,” Gov. Cuomo said during a press conference. “The whole point of the CDC’s change, the whole point of our change is to say to people, there are benefits to being vaccinated.”
The caveat however is that masks will still be required on public transit, schools and healthcare facilities, and businesses may still impose mask requirements.
Cuomo stated that proof of vaccination may soon be required for certain major “vaccinated” venues.
“The state protocol, just so you know, is when you got vaccinated, you got a card. You could also have the Empire pass which is on your smartphone. But on a vaccinated venue, you will be asked – or can be asked – to produce that card or proof of vaccination,” Cuomo said.
Cuomo added that the state’s own vaccine passport, called the Excelsior Pass, a downloadable app slated to replace mask mandates as the new normal, will be enforced by businesses.
“You have an Excelsior Pass app or you have a card. One or the other,” Cuomo said, adding that businesses “can check, they can ask at the door, they can ask when you are seated at the table, or not. There is no mandatory compliance that the state is imposing on the private vendors.”
New York first introduced the Excelsior Pass in March, which Cuomo hailed as “the next step in our thoughtful, science-based reopening.”
“The question of ‘public health or the economy’ has always been a false choice — the answer must be both,” the governor said.
